Poverty and unemployment continue to hit harder countrywide and Tororo district has been spared either. According to available statistics, out of every 1000 children born in Tororo District, 98 die before reaching their first birth days, and 86 before reaching their fifth birth days and no doubt poverty is partly to blame. With life expectancy in the district being at 47 years, one would justifiably assume that poverty and unemployment has perpetuated the situation. Yet it is not very clear in the District Development Plan what will be done to alleviate the already worrisome situation. All in all, corruption remains the number one tragedy that has befallen the country but if the Tororo district management and other district officials throughout the country heed the president’s trumpet call for an end to corruption and use the generated funds for development projects in the districts, then there is no reason why the set goals in the next three financial years cannot be achieved.
